Shot over the course of four years, OUR SCHOOL follows the attempt to integrate isolated rural Roma (or “gypsy”) children into the mainstream school system of Romania. Focusing on three young Roma, 7-year-old Alin, 12-year-old Beni and 16-year-old Dana, this fascinating film takes an unflinching look at the challenges on both sides of a longstanding tradition of prejudice. Already far behind the learning curve, Alin, Beni and Dana struggle against family expectations and negative stereotyping in hopes of ultimately creating a better future for themselves. — AP

I wanted to ask the filmmaker if she had any idea when she started filming how striking a story she would be left with years later. This was a careful and hugely invested film with careful attention to visual interest in addition to the human drama. And seeing the casual bias against the Roma families made me think of how completely relative and not absolute such bias is around the world toward people who are at all different from the majority, and therefore eminently conquerable.
