At the metaphorical edge of Tokyo, music crumples and the musicians are to blame. They wire themselves for sound, they treat familiar instruments like cheap playthings, they get lost in technology, and they embrace every hiss, pop, thud, buzz and drone. But their performances – integrated with vivid scenes of their teeming and complicated megalopolis – are unfailingly human, nonetheless. The infrastructure may host an endless churn of destruction and renewal, but it’s the people who make an unforgettable racket. For these Japanese iconoclasts, a noisy city is never a dead city.
