At the dawn of the 21st century, the Utopian impulse that gave rise to generations of radical thinkers and fantastical innovations (such as the creation of the Esperanto language, designed to end war and cultural conflict) is in a fragile state. The future that for generations had been a place of unbridled potential and hope has turned into a dystopic nightmare presenting more of a threat than a promise. In this electrifying hybrid film that encompasses live narration and musical accompaniment with traditional documentary and still images, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sam Green (THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND) uses the collective experience of cinema to explore the value of the Utopian impulse, and to lament an era that may be absent of such hope and big ideas.
