Faster than a speeding auto rickshaw, Faiza Ahmad Khan’s film will steal you away and take you sailing joyously into the skies of India with a scrawny, baggy-suited Superman. Khan documents the work of filmmaker Shaikh Nasir and his crew, who take well-known films and develop versions infused with local culture of their home city of Malegaon. Malegaon is an industrial textile city, and many of the actors and crew earn their living working the power looms to make cloth. Working the looms is punishing, low-paying work, and making a film serves as a welcome respite from the day-to-day grind. Movies have always been popular in Malegaon, where people used to gather in commercial video parlors to watch films. More recently, video parlors seem to be closing as more and more people watch DVDs at home. Shaikh Nasir is nostalgic for those video parlors, where he first acquainted himself not only with Bollywood’s latest, but also with lots of blockbuster films from the US. His feature MALEGAON KA SUPERMAN is super-low-budget filmmaking, shot by a determined and self-taught director on a hand-held camera. While disasters beset Nasir’s “Superman” on film, one obstacle after another seeks to derail production. Khan captures Nasir’s efforts and achievements, while setting us firmly in the daily life of Malegaon, offering us a look at Muslim life in a largely Hindu part of India. A terrifically fun story of underdogs who rise to the task of being supermen.
